• If installing a 1992-2002 steering gear in a 1979-1991 vehicle, you'll want the appropriate 5.0L or 5.8L steering pump. A 4.6L pump will not fit on a 5.0/5.8 engine.

• Pulleys are interchangeable between the police and civilian power steering pumps. Both pumps use input shafts with the same dimensions.

• Debris in the steering hydraulic fluid from a failed power steering pump will wear the components inside the steering box at a greatly accelerated rate and may also cause the valves to bind.

• Police power steering pumps may wear out with little mileage accumulated on the odometer due to extensive periods of idling.

• The power steering system hoses will also degrade as a vehicle ages and may release debris into circulation. Heat from a large number of low speed turning maneuvers will accelerate the aging process. But a large percentage of the hose related debris is likely to be due solely to the vehicle's age. If you are replacing a failed box or a pump on a vehicle over 3 years old, replace the hoses with new service assemblies too.

• The control valve for the EVO steering system is mounted on the back of the steering pump.
• 1999-2002 police cruisers still had the electrical connector in the engine harness for the EVO valve. However, the body harness inside the car is not wired for the EVO system and the control module connector is not present. And the pump in these cars does not have the hole cut into it to mount the control valve.
  
• The EVO valve is a PWM modulated device. When it wears, it usually lets too much fluid pressure through it. This will cause road feel to decrease and may cause the steering to wander on the highway due to the higher level of assist. In some evo equipped vehicles, this valve may be totally inoperative due to wear and steering assist won't vary with speed at all.
  
• The electrical connector for the evo valve is located in close proximity to the engine oil filter. If your steering suddenly becomes really easy to turn immediatetly after an oil change, you may find that this connector has been inadvertently been pulled off.
