Some early 1992 units still had the AOD transmission. Part way into the production year, the AOD-E was introduced. The electrically controlled AOD-E transmission model numbers will begin with PKC. The older AOD variants will begin with PKA.

The AOD transmission is listed as a "2 bolt starter" transmission in some sources. The AOD-E listed as a "3 bolt starter". Besides the electronic control issue, vehicles with the AOD transmission also have a different bellhousing pattern on the engine than vehicles with AOD-E transmissions do.

The linkage where the shifter cable connects was revised starting in the 1994 model year. This style linkage is still used in production 2005 vehicles.

The stator support was also revised starting in the 1994 model year.

The transmission was renamed to the 4R70W starting in the 1995 model year. With the name change, a new wide ratio planetary gear set was installed and the positions of the fluid cooler send and return lines reversed.

The transmission tailshaft housing bushing where the slip yoke of the driveshaft inserts was altered when the AODE to 4R70W transition occured. The flange pattern on the rear axle assembly where the driveshaft connects remains unchanged though.

The impedance of the tcc solenoid was also raised which reduced heat generation inside the powertrain control module.

The valve body recieved a new casting, seperator plate and other major changes in it's hydraulic circuits. The diameter of the guide pin bolts was also reduced.

A new torque converter lockup piston was introduced part way into the 1996 model year. Converters with the old style piston will have round lugs on the flex plate studs. Later models with the newer style lockup piston will have square lugs.

The factory installed transmission pan was also revised to contain a deep well to prevent fluid starvation during hard turns and other evasive maneuvers where fluid slosh is a concern.

Vehicles still utilized a heat exchanger located inside the radiator. All police vehicles and some of the civilian vehicles also have an external transmission cooler in front of the radiator.

The factory calibration of the 1997 pcm's has a different torque converter lockup strategy to lower the incidence of converter related "shudder".

New high energy friction material was introduced. And use of Mercon V transmission fluid became mandatory in all 1998 and later crown vics.

A new mechanical diode replaced the roller clutch setup used on the intermediate clutch. However, the snap ring which retains the one-way clutch to the reverse drum remained relatively unchanged.

A new "hardwire" circuit board replaced the previous "softwire" setup used to connect the bulkhead connector to the tft sensor and tcc, epc, and shift solenoids. If installing one of these transmissions into an earlier vehicle, the vehicles electrical harness will have to be repinned to make the vehicle shift.

A new oil to air (OTA) cooler with a thermostatic bypass valve in it was introduced starting in the 1998 model year on all civilian and police models. The cooler improves lube flow during cold starts by helping the transmission fluid heat up faster. But it cannot be properly flushed with conventional flushing equipment and must be replaced with a new service assembly during transmission overhaul to properly remove contaminants. All transmission cooling is now handled by the external transmission cooler, and the radiator no longer contains an in tank heat exchanger as in previous years.

Beginning in the 1999 model year, all police vehicles became equipped with higher stall speed 11.25" torque converters. Civilian vehicles still used 12" converters. With the introduction of the 11.25" converter, the engine rev limter was also raised accordingly in police vehicles.

Additionally, vehicles may have either a 7 tooth or an 8 tooth output shaft. Previous model year crown vics all used an 8 tooth output shaft.

The valve body recieved a new casting and significant changes in the overdrive circuit starting in the 2001 model year. PCM recalibration or valve body alteration may be required if installing one of these units into an earlier vehicle.

The output shaft speed sensor also had it's electrical connector changed in the 2001 model year. If installing one of these transmission assemblies into an earlier vehicle, make sure to install a 2000 or earlier oss sensor, otherwise you won't be able to physically plug the oss electrical connector on your vehicles electrical harness into transmission assembly.

The electronic pressure control solenoid first introuced in 1999 5.4L trucks now is factory installed in all 2001 and later crown vic transmissions too. The new XL3Z-7G383-AB epc solenoid can safely be added to earlier vehicles and is desirable since it results in slightly higher main line pressure under heavy load.

Starting in the 2003 model year, the vehicle speed sensor is no longer used. Inspect the transmission to insure that the vss teeth are present on the output shaft prior to installing one of these transmissions into an earlier vehicle.

The planetary ring gear was revised starting in the 2004 model year. The appearance difference is subtle, but the oss sensor will send incorrect data to the pcm if one of these transmission assemblies is installed into an earlier vehicle.

The front pump assembly also was revised and the intermediate clutch now utilizes a wave plate.

A transmission turbine shaft speed sensor (TSS) was added to the transmission assembly. This involved adding a new mounting hole to the tranny case for the sensor. Adding the sensor itself, and making the sun shell non-magnetic so the sensor could read through the shell to pick up the input shaft speed. With the new TSS sensor, the transmission name was changed from 4R70W to 4R70E.

Also, a new epc solenoid and bracket was introduced starting in the 2005 model year. This new 5C2Z-7G383-AB solenoid has different fluid flow characteristics than than in earlier years. Installing one of these transmission assemblies into an earlier crown vic without installing an earlier revision of the epc solenoid and bracket will result in a good transmission being burned up in a hurry due to incorrect line pressure inside the transmission assembly. Interestingly, the 2005 transmissions use the same valve bodies as their 2004 counterparts.

Additionally, 2005 is the first year that crown vics became equipped with electronic throttle control (aka drive-by-wire). The pcm powertrain control strategy was completly reworked to incorpate the new turbine shaft speed sensor and electronic throttle control system.

New flexplate introduced into production. The same 4W7Z-6375-AA flexplate accepts both the 11.25" torque converters and the 12" torque converters

The transmission went back to a softwire internal electrical power distribution setup similar to what was used in the pre-1998 vehilces. With this change, a new torque converter clutch (TCC 9L3Z-7G484-A) solenoid, a new electronic pressure control (EPC 9L3Z-7G383-A) solenoid, a a new case connector were introduced. To install one of these transmissions into an earlier vehicle, you will need to modify the vehicle's transmission electrical harness to accomodate the new case connector or swap out all the internal electrical components.

Also, the transmission fluid was changed to Mercon LV (part number XT-10-QLV) and the valve body updated. The previous 1998-2008 crownvics used Mercon V (XT-5-QM) fluid instead.
